Reading Rainbow: Iron Will by Grime
I’ve never been super into Grime’s tattoo work. No doubt the dude is incredible talented. It’s just never really hit me that way.. ya know? But then my lady got me Grime’s new self published monograph, Iron Will. It’s an oversized, hardcover, full color collection of work he’s completed over the past nine years.. And I gotta say, it’s fucking incredible! And his newest work really stands out.. there’s a couple flicks of these “blown out” snake tattoos he’s been doing that just shut the fucking show down. If the art wasn’t enough, dude has included a bunch of intensely personal journal entries that go along with the timeline. Their really harsh peaks into what’s going on behind the curtain. Like when you ask someone how their day is going and they say, “Not bad. Thanks!” But in reality they just found out their spouse has been cheating on them, their credit card debt is overwhelming, and their elderly father is losing his mind to dementia.
This wasn’t a cheap purchase. $200, in fact. But I can honestly say this was worth it (my lady and I have a joint bank account so it’s not as though she paid for it). Grime published this himself so the money is going to him and the book is a work of art in itself. And it comes in this fancy case, along with Two Year Autopsy, Grime’s first sketchbook/monograph, published in 2002. My advice.. skip the bar for a couple nights, save your money, buy Iron Will.
Booze Crooze: Dogfish Head Fort
Honestly, I don’t think I’ve ever had a stronger beer than this… 18 fucking percent! And I gotta say, they did a good job hiding it. I’ve had plenty of 10% ABV brews, and most of them tasted (or at the very least, smelled) of the booze. Where they hid the extra 8 is a fucking mystery. Well, probably under that overwhelmingly sweet raspberry taste. So I guess that’s not much of a mystery.
My homie Throat Avatar bought a bottle of this last weekend and we split it with out boy, Sparkles. it was good that we split it. Because here’s another first… I don’t think I could drink the entire bottle on my own. Not because of the ABV… but because it was just so damn sweet. Overall, I’d say splurge once. Maybe after winning twenty bucks on a scratcher. Otherwise, stick to grain alcohol and High Life. You’ll get there on way or another.
